City of Richmond, Southside riverfrontRodent Control in Manchester, Richmond
Across the James from downtown, Manchester's rail lines, riverfront and warehouse lofts make for steady rat pressure.
An old city on the south bank
Manchester was its own city on the south bank of the James before it became part of Richmond, and it served as the county seat of Chesterfield for a few years in the 1870s. Its riverfront filled with mills, warehouses and rail yards. Today many of those brick buildings hold loft apartments, offices and studios, with newer apartment blocks filling the gaps. Hull Street runs through the middle, and bridges connect the neighborhood to Shockoe Bottom and downtown across the river.
Rail corridors and the river edge are classic Norway rat habitat. Ballast, brush, loading docks and drainage channels give rats shelter, and they move toward buildings for food.

Lofts, vacant lots and older homes
Converted warehouses have the same problem as in Shockoe Bottom: shared pipe chases, old freight openings and ground-floor businesses below residents. Vacant lots and buildings still waiting for redevelopment hold rubble and brush where rats burrow. On the residential blocks of Manchester and nearby Swansboro and Blackwell, frame and brick homes with crawl spaces see the usual mouse problems in the fall. A provider should check foundations, crawl space vents and any gaps where new utility lines were added. Riverfront buildings should also keep floor drains covered, since heavy rain can push rats out of drainage lines.

Do the rail lines bring rats into Manchester?
Rail corridors offer shelter and travel routes for rats. Buildings near them should keep foundations sealed and trash secured.
A vacant lot next to me has rats. What can I do?
Report overgrowth, trash or open vacant buildings through RVA311 or the city's Property Maintenance and Code Enforcement Division, and seal your own foundation.
Do you cover Swansboro and Blackwell?
