Rodent Control in Jackson Ward, Richmond

Historic row houses, downtown traffic and the I-95 corridor shape the rodent problems in Jackson Ward.

Historic homes next to downtown

Jackson Ward sits less than a mile from the Virginia State Capitol, north of Broad Street and west of Court End. It was a center of Black business and culture, sometimes called the Harlem of the South, and home to Maggie L. Walker, whose house on Leigh Street is a national landmark. The neighborhood paid a heavy price when the Richmond-Petersburg Turnpike, now I-95, was built through it and opened in 1958.

What remains is a dense grid of nineteenth century row houses, many with ornamental ironwork porches, alongside newer infill homes and apartments. Shared walls, rear yards and small alleys connect the blocks.

Highway edges, downtown trash and older houses

Highway embankments and the edges of large downtown sites hold brush and debris where Norway rats burrow, and downtown restaurants and offices nearby produce a lot of trash. Inside the row houses, mice and rats use the same routes as in the Fan: rear foundations, basement openings, crawl spaces under additions and shared walls. Renovation work on older houses is common here and can stir up rodents on a block. A provider should check the rear of the house and the shared walls first. If you own a rental here, a building-wide look is worth the time, since tenants on both sides of a shared wall may be dealing with the same mice.

Services Jackson Ward callers ask about

Jackson Ward rodent questions

Are rats worse near the interstate?

Brushy highway edges give rats shelter. Homes near those edges should keep rear foundations and crawl space vents sealed.

Can I seal a historic row house without damaging it?

Yes. Copper mesh, mortar matched to the old brick and removable vent screens are common choices. Ask the provider how they handle historic materials.

Is Jackson Ward covered?

Yes. Calls from Jackson Ward and nearby downtown neighborhoods go to an independent rodent provider serving central Richmond.
